I am finding a market in cleaning rooftop moss.

A big off season money maker for lawn care professionals is fall leaf cleanups and spring yard cleanups. With all those leaves falling on the ground, they can make a yard look like a mess. But what about up above? Roofs and gutters? It might not seem like a perfect add on at first, but think about it. If you are already offering property care services, how difficult is it to clean out gutters and while you are up there, clean roofs of moss. That is an idea an entrepreneur on the Gopher Lawn Care Business Forum implemented and with it, he found a way to bring in money when the grass isn’t growing.

One lawn care business owner wrote “I’m having more and more customers asking me what they can do for killing and controlling moss on rooftops. I’ve done 4 jobs already this season with a roof cleaning product. 1 gallon of the stuff I am using is about $26.00 and will cover about 2,250 sq ft. This stuff works great but it does take a couple weeks if not months to see results. The moss will start to yellow and then turn to dust and slowly blow away. I’ve made some good money with minimal investment. A ladder, 1 gallon sprayer and the product.”

I am charging $75 an hr plus liquid product. It is a bit higher than my normal hourly rate being that there’s more of a hazard being on a roof. As far as my research has shown me, you don’t need any kind of licensing to apply this product. It’s active ingredient is ADBAC Alkyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride, ( ammonia ) and diluted with water. It’s sold at any local hardware / supply store. The DOA ( department of agriculture ) found it only to harm fish.

This stuff even works with removing Lichen. The reviews on it talk a lot about it. You can get some good info if you google it.”

A second lawn care business owner said “what a GREAT idea. There are a TON of mossy roofs around here. I’ve not been asked about moss, but a lot of my mowing customers ask about gutter cleaning. There are no regulations to restrict me there. I bet offering this additional service would be a great way to get a gutter job at the same time too. Thanks for the awesome tip!

You could simply drive around looking for moss on roofs and then send them some marketing material or leave a door hanger at their house. By educating the potential customer on the damage moss can cause, I’m sure that help sell more of your services.”
