Getting lawn care customers to sign up again in the new year.

Getting through the first year of running your mowing business is tough no doubt, but when you make it through, you really have to start thinking of getting all your customers back in the spring. There are various methods to do this and they get easier to implement as you are in business longer. Here is a great discussion on the Gopher Lawn Care Business Forum that gives you some ideas to consider when looking to start up your mowing schedule in the spring.

One lawn care business owner wrote “I have seasonal and annual contracts that I had made last November. My problem is getting my existing customers to sign a contract that starts the season on April 1 thru Nov 30 for seasonal customers. I tried calling them and letting them know that I was starting service on the 1st of April and some of them said I’ll call you when I need the service. I need to start everyone on April 1st so that I can have everyone on my route. This will also save on gas for me and I can have an organized schedule. Does anyone have any ideas?”

A second lawn care business owner said “what I do is call every client to see about getting them on schedule and some agree to be scheduled and others say ‘in a couple of weeks.’ Those that try to put it off tend to be surprised how quickly the grass starts growing again and they end up calling me before the two weeks are up. I’m just try to get people to agree with a time schedule and get them on a contract.

An annual lawn care contract is the way to go.

Ideally you want to have your customers on an annual contract where they pay a 12 month budgeted rate. So when the new year rolls around, they simply keep paying and you just show up when you need to.

That’s what I’m trying to implement more and more but it’s tough as customers are also trying to hold on to their money. I have to work on trying to convince them the value of an annual service agreement. I have annual and seasonal contracts just for this reason. Ultimately I’m going to want all my customers on annual contracts, step by step I will get there. It’s difficult to start out doing this your first year because no one knows if you will continue to be in business by the end of the year.”

A third shared “each year, I make the schedule out the same way I would if all my customers had agreed to the start date. If they haven’t called you back by the day you are in their area then skip over them and spend the rest of the day trying to pick up accounts. When they call needing service, look on your schedule and give them the date you will be back in that area.
I know business can be hard to come by but customers trying to save a dollar by waiting one more week are customers I would rather not deal with.”
