The early days of starting any business are sure to make you panic. You begin to question yourself. Do you have what it takes? Are you cut out to be an entrepreneur? Will you run out of funds before your business begins to pay for itself? That kind of self doubt is what is going on in one entrepreneurs head as he asks the Gopher Lawn Care Business Forum advice on how he should handle his start up phase doubts and how to sell lawn care services.

One lawn care business owner wrote “I live in Florida, a recent transplant from Ohio. I am a truck driver by trade, and have gotten to the point where I can’t stand my job anymore and it’s taking a toll on all facets of my life.

Since truck driving is the only ‘trade’ I know, my wife and I sat down to discuss what options I have. For years I have always entertained the idea of starting a lawn care company, but never followed through with it. I have many friends back in my hometown that did this for a living and they always seemed happy. I love working in my yard and take pride it how it looks so I feel this would be a perfect fit.

After pondering this for a while and talking with my wife, I decided to set a deadline as to how long I will stay with this trucking company and then THAT WOULD BE IT!!! I have had enough of busting my butt for someone else, hating it, and getting nowhere fast. The only way to be happy is to make yourself happy, right? This is the impetus that has caused me to start my own lawn care business.

Because of the way I am, I wanted to start everything legit and professionally. I want things done the right way. My neighbor across the street runs his own lawn care business, and appears to be doing very, very well.

Now I am starting to panic though. Last year, granted I started my mowing business very late in the season, total jobs done, 1 (pressure washing). Total bids given for the past mowing season, 1 (still don’t know if I got it), other then that I received no calls.

Now I am trying to stay positive for this season. I am handing out flyers, posting on  craigslist, using Facebook, handing out business cards, my truck is lettered, t-shirts are made, insurance is paid, equipment is prepped. So far, nothing, nada, no calls.

I know a lot of veterans advocate to start by selling to friends and family, but since I am new to the area, I don’t really have that option. My neighbor told me he does really no advertising and gets all his customers through word of mouth. I think he is a little against me starting up, and he doesn’t really talk business to me. I thought I had one job for this year at a local convenience store, but some damn teenagers told the guy they’d cut their lawn for $15 bucks. That won’t even cover my gas.

I get so mad about this I could just scream. I need some words of advice, encouragement and I need some just plain old HELP on how to sell lawn care services!”

A second lawn care business owner said “when I first started out I did a lot of cold calling. I would call small commercial clients and knock on every door that looked like it needed mowing. Half of what makes you successful in this business is relationships and being in the right place at the right time. You have to realize that you are not in the landscape business, you are in a the people business. Anyone can mow grass but that is a very small part of this business. Follow up is a huge part and staying in front of people is how to sell lawn care services.

I get more business from other companies because they don’t talk to property managers and it is not that they do a bad job but everyone wants to feel important. I meet my customers myself, not through my managers good. So try using the time you have to go out and build relationships and meet people.  I remember what it was like to be where you are now and it is hard but hang in there ad it gets easier with time.”

A third added “you relocated and want to start a business. My best advice is to go door to door. The majority out there still mow their own grass, but with people working longer hours and having less time to do it, there are a lot of openings.

Offer to do a few mowings for gas money or free if need be as long as the customer allows you to put a temporary lawn sign out front to promote your company and allow others to see your contact information and be able to get a hold of you. Most people who see you out there mowing will not interrupt you while you are on the job. If they like what they see you doing, you will start to get calls.

We are in sales business and the majority of our new sales come from word of mouth. Referrals from happy customers are the best form of advertising. Make sure before you leave, that the customer is completely satisfied with your work. Ask if there is anything else you can do before you move to the next job. With that positive attitude and customer service you will have a lot of happy clients. Don’t be afraid to ask for referrals as well. Tell them any additional customers you can get through them, you would surely appreciate.”
