He got involved with his community and offered some free lawn care to local residents in need and because of this, he got a lot of attention. It’s this kind of attention that can really help you build a positive name for yourself. He shared with us his story on the Gopher Lawn Care Business Forum and how it all played out. He wrote “I was sitting in church and the preacher was talking about how important it is for all of us to get out into the community and do some good deeds. Then I had this idea, I should give away some free lawn care to local people in need.
One of the groups I volunteer with locally is the meals on wheels program. A few of those people I delivered food to had some really bad yards. This one older lady in particular got me started when I offered to mow her lawn for free. Then, I decided to scale it up a bit to help those down on their luck or to families that have a member of their household serving overseas.
To promote my services and my free lawn cuts, I put an ad on craigslist offering free lawn service to anyone disabled/old, etc who couldn’t afford it and also for families of active military personnel who are overseas. Someone from the news channel saw it and called me and asked to do the story. Of course I said yes!
They came to videotape me as I was out mowing a neighbors lawn who couldn’t do it himself on account of a recent back surgery. They interviewed me and a two minute video of me mowing and the interview showed up on the news that night! From that interview, I received lots of calls from people needing help, people wanting to help me, and some people wanting to pay me for lawn care service. My pastor saw it and is showing it to the church on Sunday so who knows where this could go next.
I figure if you wanted to recreate this, you could do it the same way and maybe send an email to the local press about what you are doing. Don’t wait for them to contact you, you should contact them! Try it out and see what happens. It really can help you create goodwill in your community.”
