The winter months can be difficult for the newer lawn care business to get through but one member of the Gopher Lawn Care Business Forum found an additional service he could offer that will help him pave the way to pick up more lawn care customers in the Spring. He is now offering janitorial services.

He wrote “here is what I have been doing to drum up business. I went from $100,000 liability insurance and switched it over to a million dollar liability policy.

Then I bought 2,500 postcards, bought some business mailing lists from around my area, went to the post office bought 200 stamps, slapped them on, tossed them in the basket and walked away. Today I received 7 calls to come in and talk, and I landed 5 bids! Now I’m in the janitorial side of life. Cleaning bathrooms and making making.

So lets recap shall we? The first time out was last Spring when I first started my business. I bought all my equipment brand new. I have two of each, mowers, blowers, trimmers. I bought a trailer used, bought a brand new snow blower for $1,250. Bbought 2 trucks, one is a 4×4 for the snow removal.

I was still working a full time job and working my lawn care business on the side. I worked like a tank but, I had to make more money. And I did. My secret?….Being friendly. Saying thank you every chance I got and telling everyone to have a good day, take care. That’s all I did and I did good work. Handshakes to the Mr’s and jokes to the Mrs.

Before I did this I had no clue on janitorial service, I just read a lot and followed some advice. Now I can keep busy at night doing that and snow removal and working my day job.

Most times it’s easier just to do something then to analyze it to death.”

What got you to think about janitorial services? What kind of janitorial services did you advertise in your postcard?

“All private offices and buildings have parking lots and grass. Where there is grass there is money. Where there is a parking lot there is money. So what if you have to clean a toilet??? Now let’s take it further, why not offer parking lot cleaning and stripping.

So you managed to get 15 accounts with your janitorial services. That bid could really effect who gets the lawn and snow right? Who needs new parking lot stripping. There are endless possibilities really. You have to ask yourself, how much do you want to work and how fast do you want to build your business? Because that’s what it is all about. It’s a business and I don’t know about you or anyone else that is doing this as income but, I love money. My kid will need it someday, and I really dont want my kid punching a time clock when she is 34 years old. If I bust my butt and build something good then she can take it if she wants to. I am not big time yet but, it might be good to start thinking I am because maybe it will push me into another direction to become big time.”

These are all great ideas on ways to utilize your time when lawn mowing stops for the year.
