How to use a box blade and landscape rake to install a new lawn.

Installing a new lawn can be a very labor intensive job if you let it be. If you harness the power of a compact utility tractor, you can do a lot more work, in a shorter time, with less staff you need to pay. Here is a great discussion from the Gopher Lawn Care Business Forum on how one landscaper can install a new lawn on an averaged sized property in four hours.

One lawn care business owner wrote “some may wonder how a box blade works with lawn soil and also a landscape rake. When installing a new lawn here is what I do. A box blade handles one bucket of soil very well. So starting at the farthest point dump one bucket across the entire width then box blade it out. Keep doing this until you are at your final point. Then I do a final pass with the box blade.

Next swap out the box blade for a landscape rake and go over the entire area, spread seed, spray and then we roll it. I recently worked on a yard that took 36 yards of soil and it took me about four hours start to finish to finish the job.

The reason you use a box blade initially is because the box blade makes the ground perfectly level. You then rake it as you want some seed below the surface to ensure germination. We generally put 25 percent more seed on than required so that we are not called back because the lawn is not growing as fast as the client wants. When you then roll the lawn, it pushes everything into the soil. Any surface are removed before we even start the job.

I spread hay on the ground after rolling if the grade is more than 15 degrees. You just have to as a good thunder storm will wash it all away. The same holds true with sod except we use sod staples. Sure it’s a pain in the butt as it is a slow process, but it’s a lot better than having everything wash away and having to restart it all from scratch.
