Getting your first customer can become a monumental task. There are many reasons why it is so difficult. You are new to business, you lack the confidence to sell, and you just haven’t had the experience to know who to make your sales presentation too! I have been wasting a lot of gas lately with snow plowing season right around the corner, as I’ve been out driving around looking for customers. I actually did bag my first commercial lot today (heck ya) and have been passing out business cards to anyone I see outside while I drive to an from the two jobs I have right now. Hopefully some of the snowplowing clients will use me for some landscaping come next year.
To land that snow plowing account, I just stopped in at a local commercial building and asked if they had someone that plowed for them. When they said yes, instead of just walking out as I did for a bunch of previous people, I decided to ask if they were happy with him an they said no. I then asked why, and they said the company over salted and did more plowing than he had to, for the extra pay. So I left a business card and gave them a rough quote.
Four days later, yesterday, I stopped back in an talked to the manager and now I have one commercial customer for sure. I also picked up a residential the same way and it hasn’t even dipped below 40 degrees yet.
It’s amazing how much easier it is to sell someone on my snow plowing services when I don’t push them for a response right on the spot. Just introducing myself, giving them a quick estimate, and then stopping by later with a follow up visit has sure helped. As I gain more customers I am sure word of mouth will help me as well.”
