With the right equipment, your lawn care business can make a lot of money in a short period of time. Performing jobs faster and more efficiently than your competition will most certainly bring you more profits. Let’s see an example of this as discussed in the Gopher Lawn Care Business Forum.
One landscaper wrote “I had a client call a few days ago wanting their lawn tilled under and hydro seeded. To do this job we used RTF hydro seed. If you are looking for a lawn that will stand up to just about anything, this seed is amazing.
Anyhow our process is to apply 1/2″ to 3/4″ of top or turf dressing and till it under. Next we spray the area with an organic product that will brake the grass down. Lastly we go back in five days, till again, roll and then have the hydro seeder come in.
Recently I bought a new PTO tiller for my tractor and the results just shock me. The quality of the finished product vs a walk behind unit is amazing. I have never seen such great results and my clients are raving about it.
This current property I am working on is a 18,000 sq/ft yard. It took me 2 hours from start to finish to till it. I brought along a new helper, as I am showing him the various things we do, and had him hand rake a few spots. When I wrapped it up, the customer came out and paid me five hundred bucks for those two hours. The total job cost the customer close to $3,000. The 18 yards of turf dressing needed was around $780 and the hydro seeding with this kind of grass seed can cost upwards of $1,000 per quarter acre.
With a PTO tiller you do not need downward pressure. This unit is a reverse tiller that spins at high speed, around 900 RPM at the tip of the tine. Basically when we till grass or weeds, there simply isn’t anything left of it.
I see lawn care equipment purchases like this one s a strategic investment. They may be expensive to some but I look at what the return on investment is before I buy it. With the work we have and what it can do, the $21,000 cost for the tractor is paid for in under 6 months and these tractors will go 10 years or more. Being diesel it just sips fuel, using about 5 gallons every 11 hours going full steam.
The other advantage to having such equipment is I have next to no competition. A lawn like this would probably take a day to till with a walk behind tiller and even with that, you will never these results.
A couple of days later, I stopped by the job site for a moment and took a couple of pictures from the truck. It was raining very hard so I couldn’t get a real close look but from what I could see, it turned out great.
If you can find the need for specialized equipment and then you can fill the need by having the equipment, you will create a niche for your business that can increase your profits. Always keep an ear open to hear what your customers are needing and jump on opportunities when they present themselves.”
